Project1

1. Basic Information
Project: Phoenix International Media Center
Architect: BIAD UFo
Client: Phoenix Television
Location: Beijing, China
Project Year: 2009-2012
Project Size: 65,000㎡

Phoenix International Media Center locates in the southwest corner of Chaoyang Park; the site area is 1.8 hectares. The total floor area of the building is 65,000m2 with a height of 55m. Apart from the media office, the broadcasting studios and the production offices, the building provides an abundant of open spaces for the public to get interactive experiences, which expresses the unique operation concept of Phoenix Media.
The architect intended to create ecological environment shell embraces. The building’s sculptural shape originates from the “Mobius Strip”. The sculptural shape provides the building a harmony relationship with the irregular direction of the existing streets, the sitting corner of the site, and the Chaoyang Park.

2. Modeling

Based on the floor plan, I drew a interpolate curve on Rhinoceros.

Divide it with 20 frames, each frame generates one ellipse on each plane. Rotate the ellipses certain angles that were generated by series.

Duplicate the first ellipse and rotate it 180 degrees in order to make a closed surface.

Move the lowest point of each ellipse on the same plane.

Loft those ellipses, then get the mass.

Divide the surface to make each piece as a curtain wall.

Identify every centric of those elements. Use the Graft Tree to put the data of one element in one group. And then, use the Deconstruct Brep to isolate every element's four points, and find one pair of diagonal points together to connect them with the center point.

These lines are still straight lines so rebuild them to get smooth curves on the mass surface.

Use the Prep Frames node to obtain a series of normal planes of those curves, and draw rectangles on the planes. Sweep the rectangles along the curves.

Similarly, to create other structures (pipe2, 3), repeat the same steps as before.

This is the result of modeling.

This is rendered one.

3. Kangaroo Physics
Use Kangaroo Physics to create an entrance to enter the centric yard shown in the photo above.

These 4 Springs nodes are connected to different Curve nodes and have different stiffness from 50 to 200 to make the entrance smoothly.

Select points except for the entrance area as anchor points, and then apply the Kangaroo Physics.
